Amos Borntreger: A Legacy of Faith, Family, and Roofing Integrity
Amos Borntreger, founder of SonShine Roofing, built more than just a business—he built a legacy. Born in Bowling Green, Missouri, as one of 16 children, Amos was raised in Kalona, Iowa, where he learned the value of hard work, faith, and community from a young age. In 1987, Amos brought his roofing business to Sarasota, Florida, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most trusted names in residential roofing along the Suncoast.
Amos was more than a skilled roofer—he was a man of deep conviction, guided by his unwavering Christian faith and a heart for serving others. Known for his warm smile, compassionate nature, and mentorship, Amos rarely met a stranger. His customers, employees, and neighbors remember him not just as a contractor, but as a man who took time to care—whether that meant a handshake, a word of encouragement, or a prayer.
At the heart of SonShine Roofing’s success are the same core values Amos lived by: honesty, diligence, faithfulness, and respect. These weren’t just business principles—they were personal convictions. He believed that a roof wasn’t just protection from the elements, but a promise to safeguard what matters most: family, comfort, and peace of mind.
Amos instilled these values into every part of his business. Over the years, all of his children worked alongside him, learning the trade from the ground up. His son Nathan Borntreger, now the current owner of SonShine Roofing, continues to lead the company with the same integrity and faith-driven mission his father embodied.

Even through his long battle with cancer, Amos remained steadfast in spirit. He continued to mentor, encourage, and lead with humility. He passed away in 2018, surrounded by the family he cherished deeply—including his beloved wife Mary, his four children, and thirteen grandchildren.

Nathan Borntreger is the owner of SonShine Roofing, a trusted residential roofing company serving Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte Counties. As the son of founder Amos Borntreger, Nathan grew up in the roofing trade, learning every aspect of the trade from the ground up. From sweeping shingles to leading crews, he built his expertise the hard way—through hands-on experience and a deep respect for craftsmanship.
Nathan’s leadership style is rooted in the same values his father lived by: faith, honesty, and hard work. He combines old-school dedication with modern roofing knowledge, ensuring that every job meets the highest standards of quality and integrity.

Angela and her husband have been married for more than 30 years and have raised two fabulous kids. Grandma is her absolute favorite role and she highly recommends having lots of grandchildren; they are the best! In her spare time, she can be found enjoying a hot cup of tea and a good book, working on a new painting, or going on an adventure with her family. Her teams are the Green Bay Packers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tampa Bay Lightning and she gets loud and rowdy while watching them play. Angela has been on staff at Sonshine Roofing since 2013.

Retired 20-year Police Officer veteran from the El Paso Police Department, El Paso, Texas who has a Florida Building Contractor License (inactive) and has worked as a construction consultant since his retirement in 1996. He joined SonShine Roofing as a roofing specialist/salesman about 2 years ago and has brought his 35+ years in construction management experience in both Texas and Southwest Florida to the SonShine Roofing family.

Adam hails from the state of Maine. He and his family made Florida their home in 2022. Traveling is a favorite pastime and he has visited nearly every state in the USA. Fishing, hiking, watching football and hockey are what he likes doing when he’s not playing with his son, working, or traveling.

This native Floridian loves his fur babies, is a very social guy with a great sense of humor, enjoys hanging out with family and friends, watching movies, and cheering on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is also happily married to Tara, our Project Support Specialist. Since 2018, Josh has been elbows-deep in the production department at Sonshine Roofing. He works closely with each team to get roofing projects completed and sees the job through from start to finish. Speaking on Josh’s behalf, Tara, says that the best part of his job is working with his stunning wife every day.

Tony spent more than 28 years serving and protecting others as a U.S. Marine, in local law enforcement, and as a U.S. Coast Guard reservist. After a year of retirement, he joined Sonshine in 2022. He has three grown daughters that are each his favorite and he loves to spoil them.

JB grew up in the roofing business; working on roofs with his father from a young age. After finishing school, he served our community for more than 25 years in law enforcement. Once he retired as a deputy, he came on full time at Sonshine. JB is a father of three who enjoys traveling with his wife as often as possible.

Jeremy started his career with Sonshine Roofing roofing in 2000 where he worked in sales for about 2 years. After this he moved to the Bahamas where he met his wife. He is a proud father of 2 boys.
Jeremy rejoined Sonshine Roofing in 2018 working as a roofing specialist. He strives to find the best solution for our customers and will go above and beyond to help anyone out. In his spare time he likes to fish and boat with his family.

Tara is Florida born and raised. She is a devoted mother to two bright and beautiful daughters whom she adores, and wife to Josh. Family is by far the most important thing to her. When Tara met her husband, he was already on staff at Sonshine and loving it. She didn’t hesitate to leave a long-time job elsewhere to join the Sonshine Roofing team at the first opportunity. Tara has been a team member since 2020.

Rob is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who has funny stories to tell about eating exotic Asian foods while serving the Country. He played rugby for years until a broken leg took him out of the game. Sports are his favorite pastime and he is an avid fan. Go, Yankees! He’s been married to his wonderful wife for more than 10 years. Rob joined Sonshine in 2024.

Having grown up watching his father, Nathan, work at SonShine under the late Amos Borntreger, Matthew is the third generation of this family business. He is inspired by the hard work that his father and grandfather have dedicated to the roofing trade and hopes to carry on their legacy. In his day-to-day work on the jobsite, Matthew looks forward to helping residents understand the work being done on their property.

Son of JB, Michael was born in Sarasota, raised in North Port, and now resides in Tampa where he started his career working for The University of South Florida and Hillsborough County Public Schools as a Spanish and Bilingual Social Studies teacher. Since then, he has pivoted into digital marketing and automation, now working for Sonshine Roofing in 2025.
He has always enjoyed tinkering with computers and has a passion for the arts. In his free time, Michael never backs down to a game of cards, loves walking his dog, Soli, and enjoys riding his motorcycle with a group of friends.
